Branxton features a 650MW shared connection (comprising of a 480MW and a 170MW BESS). The project has successfully secured full planning consent, establishing it as a construction-ready asset.
The proposed site meets the criteria of Policy PROP EGT3 and as such, is considered to be suitable for battery energy storage use.
Interconnection & Grid Proximity
The site is uniquely positioned in immediate proximity to the Eastern Link transmission project, currently under development by Scottish Power. This critical infrastructure serves as the primary conduit for:
  • The first of four major subsea transmission cables connecting Scotland and England.
  • Power export from SSE’s 4GW Berwick Bank, one of Europe’s largest offshore windfarms.
The Eastern Link Project will unlock the rich renewable energy capacity of Scotland and support the drive toward our Net Zero targets in Scotland and across the rest of the UK and run from Torness in East Lothian, Scotland to Hawthorn Pit, County Durham, England.
This connectivity ensures the Branxton site will be in a significant BESS location in Great Britain, leveraging continuous access to low-cost renewable energy.
Expansion Potential & Site Scalability
Situated within a naturally screened valley on 49 acres of private land, the site offers significant visual mitigation and operational flexibility. The expansive footprint provides a clear pathway for duration augmentation, allowing for a transition from a standard 2-hour duration to 4, 6, or 8-hour storage capacities. This scalability exponentially enhances the long-term commercial optionality and revenue potential of the development.
